Match 39, Bengaluru

If you thought that MS Dhoni had lost his six-hitting ability at the death, think again! With the target a fairly modest one RCB needed a good start with the ball in hand and that is exactly what they got. Dale Steyn had Shane Watson and Suresh Raina back in the hut after the first over.

Navdeep Saini maintained the pressure from the other end and soon Faf du Plessis and then Kedar Jadhav holed out to AB de Villiers at long-off trying to release the shackles. Dhoni and Ambati Rayudu went about consolidating the innings. However when Rayudu departed it seemed that the remaining overs would be a mere formality before RCB winning the match. However the man who'd done it many times before, done it against the same opposition in the same venue before, had something special planned up his sleeve.

Dhoni timed his assault perfectly as he combined boundaries with quick singles and twos to leave his side needing 26 off the last over. Even then many would have thought that it was too much but the composed skipper smashed 3 sixes and a four to take it to the final ball. Unfortunately it was not to be for Dhoni and CSK as RCB keep their slim chances of a playoff spot alive.

Kohli: "I thought we were outstanding with the ball until the 19th over. On the last ball, that was the last thing I would've expected to happen. It feels good to win a game by a small margin as we've lost a few by a small margin as well. MS did what he does best and he gave us all a massive scare. In the first 6 overs, we thought the ball wasn't coming onto the bat that much. Parthiv and AB started to rebuild. At the halfway mark we thought 175 would've been a very good total on this pitch. We thought we were 15 short. We thought their bowlers didn't make us play enough on the front foot."

Dhoni: "I think it was a good game. We did really well to restrict them to a below par total, but we needed some good batting at the top. Once you know the opposition attack, you gotta stick to your plans and if you lose too many wickets upfront that puts pressure and the middle order really can't go after the bowlers from the start. We have to carefully see what are the areas we want to take that risk. It was still difficult at the end."
